Carl Hansen & Son plans acquisition amid factory recovery

The future of the fire-damaged furniture manufacturer Getama is nearing a resolution as Carl Hansen & Son engages in discussions to acquire assets from the company. Michael Schönwiese, press manager at Carl Hansen & Son, confirmed the ongoing talks, stating, 'We are working on taking over what Getama has in their portfolio. But it hasn't fallen into place, so it's just a bit too early.'

Getama's portfolio includes iconic designs by notable figures such as Hans J. Wegner, Nanna Ditzel, and Friis & Moltke. However, neither major shareholder and CEO Jesper Temp nor the company has confirmed whether a sale is imminent.

The Getama production hall in North Jutland was severely damaged by a fire on 9 February 2024. Although initial plans indicated the hall would be rebuilt, no substantial updates have been provided. In December, it was revealed that Mogens Koch-designed furniture, previously produced by Getama, would now be manufactured by Fredericia Furniture, marking a significant shift in the company's operations.

Carl Hansen & Son's potential acquisition reflects its strategic ambition to expand its offerings and strengthen its position in the Danish furniture industry. This follows a pattern of growth for the company, which has pursued notable acquisitions in recent years.

As Getama faces continued uncertainty, Carl Hansen & Son's involvement brings renewed attention to the legacy of classic Danish design and the resilience of the industry. While the negotiations remain in progress, the outcome could mark a turning point for both companies and the iconic designs they represent.

Getama, known for its craftsmanship and long-standing contributions to Danish furniture, remains a key player despite recent challenges. The industry continues to watch closely as the details of this potential acquisition unfold.
