The Swedish Society of Industrial Design arranged the Helsingborg Exhibition of 1955, to, in the optimistic spirit of the age, showcase the previous 25 years since the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930. The event acquired the neat nickname of H55.
Scandinavia's designers were extremely well represented, including Alvar Aalto, Stig Lindberg, Yngve Ekström, Finn Juhl and Arne Jacobsen. And Björn Hultén. Björn designed a sun chair – one of the things that Skargaarden has always held dear as a source of reference and inspiration.
It's so perfect it's almost provocative. How so little material can provide so much comfort. How something that speaks with such subtlety can become the focal point for a whole garden.
They are using Agora, Sunbrella and recycled Sunbrella fabrics for the range. Sunbrella Heritage is an upholstery fabric that consists of 50% recycled material, which gives a unique fabric with a charming vintage feel. As parts of the material are recycled, the colour of the fabric varies slightly between different batches. The Heritage fabric contains small visible threads in different colours that give the collection a recycled touch. The batch variation and the visible threads give the collection a unique, authentic recycled design.
Björn Hultén
Björn Hultén is one of the most celebrated names in Swedish furniture design. He passed away in 2008, but his legacy very much lives on through everything he designed, including almost 200 chairs! Two of which we make here at Skargaarden. H55, designed for the Helsingborg Exhibition in 1955, and Kryss; designed in 1975 for the (then new) Swedish Embassy in Cairo. Björn Hultén was also a professor at the School of Design and Crafts at the University of Gothenburg.
