VidaXL under fire: 'Bad payments and charges for municipalities'

Web shop VidaXL is under criticism for poor payments to employees and the pressure it puts on local authorities. According to research by NRC, based on interviews with local residents, officials, administrators and (former) employees, it appears that customer service workers' salaries have barely been increased since 2010, leading to a situation where many employees earn only the minimum wage.

VidaXL's distribution centres employ many Eastern European migrant workers, leading to additional costs for municipalities, according to NRC. Among other things, these have to take care of information points, registration desks, social support and homeless shelters. In addition, police deployment for nuisance and addiction care costs would also have increased due to the presence of these labour migrants.

VidaXL responded by stating that it is a healthy company focused on cost management. The company stressed that it pays "market-based" and that the quality of its products is not as bad as suggested. The company also confirmed that it approaches customers who leave negative reviews with replacement products or vouchers. In 2022, VidaXL posted a record profit of €259.5 million, partly due to real estate transactions, and in 2023 it made almost €30 million in profit.
