In an impressive operation lasting just six hours, the White House will be fully adapted to the wishes of new President Donald Trump and his family. From furniture to paintings and even bathroom accessories, everything must be perfect when the new residents arrive. This move, carried out by permanent White House staff, requires tight planning and precision.

After saying goodbye to the outgoing president, employees in overalls go straight to work. They do not get to witness the ceremony, as they have to rearrange the entire interior according to a pre-determined floor plan. If necessary, walls are repainted, floor coverings replaced, and personal belongings unpacked and cleared.
The extent of the operation varies from president to president. While George W. Bush arrived with only a small load, the Clintons brought three moving vans full of personal belongings. New presidents may also choose from a historic collection of furniture and artworks, with the placement of paintings sometimes symbolic. Donald Trump, for instance, gave a prominent place to Andrew Jackson's portrait because of their shared image as mavericks within the political establishment.
