Stockholm Furniture Fair announces four exhibitions exploring design, innovation and society

The Stockholm Furniture Fair 2025 will host four exhibitions tackling themes ranging from philosophical inquiries into light to the sustainability of materials and the legacy of Italian design. These exhibitions offer visitors a chance to engage with groundbreaking design concepts while addressing critical societal issues.

"Light Doesn't Exist" by Alexander Lervik
Designer Alexander Lervik explores the philosophical essence of light in his exhibit "Light Doesn't Exist." Collaborating with the Stockholm Lighting Company, Lervik presents four experiential cubes that allow visitors to interact with facets of daylight, darkness, reflection, and colour. The exhibit challenges perceptions, suggesting that light and colour are not inherent but are created in the observer's eye. Lervik emphasizes the paradoxical roles of daylight and darkness, both essential for human perception and survival.

"Practice Unfiltered" by Olsson Lyckefors
Swedish architecture firm Olsson Lyckefors unveils the raw and unpolished stages of architectural creation in "Practice Unfiltered." This exhibition contrasts the polished final products often celebrated in architecture by showcasing early sketches, incomplete concepts, and unexpected developments in the creative process. Architects Johan Olsson and Andreas Lyckefors aim to inspire deeper appreciation for the challenges and creativity inherent in architecture. The exhibit is housed in a sustainable pavilion constructed using CLT (cross-laminated timber) and innovative Papershell facade panels. Following the fair, the pavilion will travel to other locations, emphasizing its sustainable and modular design.

"Plastic Perspectives" by Lund University
Lund University's "Plastic Perspectives" critically examines humanity's relationship with plastic, a material both ubiquitous and controversial. Curated by Julia Hertzman of Formprocess, the exhibit features contributions from ten designers and researchers exploring innovative approaches to plastic use. Themes include bio-based raw materials, smarter applications, and circular systems, drawing inspiration from the STEPS research program (Sustainable Plastics and Transition Pathways). The exhibit also addresses the environmental impacts of plastic and the complexities of balancing its utility with sustainability. Partners include Astrid, Bolon, Polykemi, and Toniton, whose designs highlight the transformative potential of sustainable plastics.

"Italia Geniale" by ADI Design Museum
"Italia Geniale" celebrates the enduring quality and innovation of Italian design. First unveiled at the Dubai Expo 2021, the exhibition has been reimagined for the Stockholm Furniture Fair. It showcases five themes—mobility, health and well-being, imagination, relationships, and work—through a curated selection of historical and contemporary objects. Over 60 iconic brands, including Ferrari, Poltrona Frau, Flos, and Olivetti, are represented alongside cutting-edge innovations like Arduino and Mogu. Promoted by Italy's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Sweden, the exhibit reflects Italy's deep commitment to creative excellence and craftsmanship.

A Platform for Innovation and Reflection
The Stockholm Furniture Fair 2025 provides a platform for exploring the intersections of design, creativity, and critical global issues. Visitors will have the opportunity to question their perspectives on materials, sustainability, and the essence of creativity, all while celebrating the timeless appeal of innovative design practices.
