Interview with Roman Plyus of PLYUS Furniture

'Despite a general slowdown in the furniture market, collectible design shows modest growth'

'A home is where we spend most of our lives—raising children, hosting friends, and creating memories. PLYUS Furniture is more than an investment in interior design; it's a meaningful addition to your family's story,' says co-founder Roman Plyus. We interview him to learn more about the company and the current market in the furniture industry.

'In 2020, during the pandemic, I reflected on my past experiences and a wealth of ideas I had accumulated over the years. That's when I decided to focus on the collectible design segment of soft furniture.' PLYUS Furniture specialises in the collectible design market, creating modern, ergonomic furniture in a minimalist style. 'We want to create furniture that connects people, places, and eras, enhancing the quality of life. Each PLYUS Furniture capsule is a limited edition—a story, a journey, a memory. Our pieces are designed to appreciate in value over time.'

'As a creator, I value not just the final product but the entire process and the knowledge gained before founding PLYUS Furniture. This is why each limited-edition capsule tells a unique story, immersing collectors in fascinating narratives I'm eager to share,' Roman shares.

Catering to the global market
PLYUS Furniture caters to private premium interiors worldwide. 'Our core market is in the USA, with 5% of our clients in Switzerland and around 15% in the Persian Gulf region. We also collaborate with hotel chains. In January, we're launching a limited collection for boutique and luxury hotels. With this new collection, we aim to showcase our unique designs and premium quality to a broader audience seeking elevated comfort while travelling,' Roman says.

When asked if Roman sees a big difference between countries' preferences, Roman shares: 'Absolutely. We've observed high demand for unique, one-of-a-kind pieces among private customers in the MENA region. Meanwhile, top design studios in the USA are requesting personalised versions of our designs, tailored to meet international hotel chain standards.'

Market challenges and opportunities
Despite a general slowdown in the furniture market, the collectible segment remains stable and shows modest growth according to Roman. 'This is why we're carefully planning to expand and enrich the PLYUS Furniture collection with designs for boutique and luxury hotels. When entering new segments, we consider the reputation and values of potential customers. It's important for us that new clients share our passion for creating bespoke furniture collections that complement fine art, like modern paintings.'

Current trends
PLYUS Furniture remains committed to modern minimalism, despite possible changes in consumer preferences. 'While trends may evolve, soft furniture serves as the foundation of interior design,' Roman explains. 'You can always add vibrant decor or accessories for a maximalist touch, but a solid, timeless base will always be relevant. Our designs are inherently versatile and can seamlessly blend with various interior styles. Minimalism is our signature—our cult.'

Plans for 2025
'In 2024, we debuted at the Maison&Objet fair, and we're incredibly grateful to the organisers for their support. The event generated significant interest in our furniture, especially from potential customers in the USA and Switzerland, where our brand is already recognised. However,' Roman says, 'the furniture market moves at a slower pace, with a long lead time between orders and deliveries. We're pleased with the exposure we received and plan to participate in similar events in 2025.'

In 2025, the company also plans to expand collaborations with luxury hotels and launch new collections of lighting equipment. 'I have many innovative ideas in the pipeline, including a unique floor lamp and a collection of chained lamps—distinctive designs that reflect PLYUS Furniture's ethos.'
