Interview with Ioana Satmari, founder of HANGarOund

'For 2025 our goal is to further establish distribution networks in France and Belgium'

In 2021, at the height of the pandemic, Ioana Satmari found herself searching for a beautiful yet comfortable hammock chair. When she couldn't find the perfect one, she decided to make her own—using wooden beams from a shovel and an old curtain, made with the help of her grandmother, who had a talent for sewing. What started as a personal project quickly turned into a business when Ioana realised that if she needed it, others probably did too. Thus, HANGarOund was born. We interview Ioana to learn more about the brand and their recent exhibit at Maison&Objet.

HANGarOund specialises in handcrafted hammock chairs designed primarily for indoor use, offering a unique blend of comfort and style. 'Whether placed in a cosy living room or a modern office, these chairs provide a relaxing place,' Ioana shares while sitting in her own hammock chair in their office in Romania. The design even includes an extendable footrest for maximum comfort—something Ioana proudly demonstrates from her own hammock chair.

Though still a young brand, HANGarOund is making waves in both its home country, Romania, and beyond. Initially selling locally, the brand has now expanded across Europe, with particularly strong demand in France and Belgium. Ioana also recently travelled to Saudi Arabia to explore potential distribution opportunities.

A first-time success at Maison&Objet
This year marked HANGarOund's debut at Maison&Objet—and it was a success. 'We're definitely coming back,' Ioana shares enthusiastically. Showcasing their signature hammock chairs, the brand quickly caught the attention of European buyers, especially those drawn to outdoor living concepts. Starting out as an indoor concept, the brand is now expanding with outdoor fabrics. A particularly exciting development is the growing popularity of bouclé outdoor fabric, a luxurious yet weather-resistant material that blends seamlessly into both indoor and outdoor spaces. 'It doesn't look like outdoor fabric, but it works just as well outside,' Ioana explains.

Sustainability is also a key focus for HANGarOund. The brand takes pride in using recycled materials wherever possible. The wooden beams that support the hammocks are repurposed from discarded materials, the cotton strings are produced in Europe, and the upholstery fabrics are almost entirely recycled. Customers can choose from a curated selection of up to ten colours, with the option for custom orders.

Looking ahead: plans for 2025
As HANGarOund continues to grow, Ioana's team is dedicated to innovating new designs while staying true to the brand's commitment to comfort and sustainability.

Upcoming plans include exhibiting at the Bucharest Fair in March and returning to Maison&Objet in September. Additionally, HANGarOund aims to further establish its distribution networks in France and Belgium, enhance its website and media presence, and solidify its reputation as a market leader in stylish, sustainable hammock chairs.

With a patented design and a name that's quickly gaining recognition, HANGarOund is well on its way to becoming a household name in the world of unique seating solutions.
