Ikea enters direct competition with secondhand marketplaces and eBay

Ikea is to expand its online platform for second-hand furniture, Ikea Preowned, to the rest of Europe. This was announced by Jesper Brodin, CEO of Ingka Group, in the Financial Times. After successful pilots in Madrid and Oslo, the system will be rolled out across Spain and Norway, with the aim of operating in all European markets within a few years.

The platform, which attracted 200,000 visitors during the trial period, allows individuals to buy and sell second-hand Ikea furniture. Ikea does not facilitate the transaction itself, but offers support via the website in the form of product information, measurements, manuals and spare parts. Buyers can pay with Ikea shopping vouchers if they wish, although in that case a 15 per cent surcharge applies to the sale price.

Although the company does not release exact figures on the financial impact of Ikea Preowned, Brodin says he is positively surprised by the interest. The expansion of the platform fits within Ikea's broader sustainability strategy, which includes energy conservation and renewable energy sources.
