French retailer to end fitted kitchen business amid market decline

A major French retailer has announced plans to discontinue its fitted kitchen business, citing a lack of success in the segment. The decision follows a downturn in the market, which saw a 6.9% decline in 2023 and is projected to fall further in 2024.

Boulanger, a well-known brand in household appliances and multimedia, confirmed that the activity 'no longer finds the success it once had,' according to La Voix du Nord. The retailer will close the kitchens departments in twelve of its stores across France, with closures expected by the end of February 2025.

The affected locations include stores in Dunkirk, Villeneuve D'Ascq, Caen, Toulon, and others. Boulanger's management acknowledged that 'this activity is no longer finding the success it had in a sector that is losing momentum.'

The closure of these departments marks a significant shift for the company, which has focused on home appliances and electronics. The move reflects the ongoing challenges in the kitchen sector, with rising competition and shifting consumer preferences shaping the market.
