GUBI has announced the return of the Timberline Table Lamp, a new desktop edition of Mads Caprani's celebrated design, originally launched in the 1970s. Following the success of the Timberline Floor Lamp, the table lamp is a modern revival of Caprani's distinctive curvilinear design, cementing his legacy as one of Denmark's most influential designers.
The Timberline Table Lamp, which was previously out of production, retains the original's signature features, including its swannecked shape and the blend of wood and cast iron. These elements symbolize the boundary between forest and mountain, reflecting the design's inspiration from the tree line, the altitude at which trees cease to grow. Caprani's signature curved design was reportedly inspired by the question mark, a symbol he would frequently doodle while designing.
Marie Kristine Schmidt, Chief Brand Officer at GUBI, explained that after the success of the Timberline Floor Lamp, it was a natural step to reintroduce the table lamp. She expressed confidence that the new edition will appeal to design enthusiasts globally and become a desktop staple.
The Timberline Table Lamp is built with the same materials and techniques as its floor counterpart. Its frame features a bent-wood spine made of alternating layers of oak and birch veneer, while the black, crescent-shaped cast iron base ensures stability and balance. The lamp is designed for localized, intimate lighting, creating a warm, ambient atmosphere without overpowering the space.
The design has been slightly adjusted for the table lamp version to improve light distribution and stability while maintaining Caprani's original vision. It is also more compact, making it easier to place around the home or office. The lamp's flat-pack packaging makes it simple to ship and assemble, with replaceable components to extend its lifespan. Additionally, the tactile wooden stem functions as a convenient carry handle, adding to its portability.
A key feature of the Timberline Table Lamp is its pleated shade, a signature of Caprani's lighting designs. The shade is made from durable white canvas, which diffuses the light and enhances the calm ambiance the lamp creates. A custom mechanism allows users to adjust the shade's angle for focused or softer lighting, depending on their needs.
Mikkel Caprani, the designer's son, shared that the table lamp serves as both a tribute to his father's timeless design and a continuation of his philosophy of combining design and functionality. The table lamp complements the floor version, and together, they offer versatile lighting options for any space.
The Timberline Table Lamp will be available from March 2025.
