Interview with the founder Geert-Jan Van Cauwelaert

The journey behind Antwerp Design Week

Antwerp Design Week has grown from a simple idea into a thriving event, connecting people, brands, and the city itself. With its sights set on the future, it's clear that ADW will continue to be a cornerstone for design enthusiasts worldwide. Here's an interview with the founder Geert-Jan Van Cauwelaert.

Antwerp Design Week is an inspiring initiative. How did it all begin?
'It all started during a business trip I took with Philippe Delaisse from Ethnicraft. We both realised how much international visitors could benefit from a more curated experience when visiting Antwerp. They often didn't know how much design and creativity thrived here. From that realization, we created a City Guide, a biannual publication showcasing not only participating Antwerp companies but also cultural landmarks, hospitality tips, and iconic spots. It was a way to connect visitors with the essence of Antwerp and the brands tied to its creative spirit.'

How did the concept evolve after that?
'After the pandemic, we noticed a quick recovery in Antwerp's design showrooms compared to the slower revival of international trade fairs. This prompted us to elevate the initiative. With 15 companies, we established a non-profit organization to create the first Antwerp Design Week in 2023.'

Tell us about the first Antwerp Design Week. What made it special?
'The 2023 edition was a strong starting point that showed us the potential to create something truly meaningful. We began with 15 brands, but as word spread, the event grew rapidly, and by launch, 31 companies had joined us. Each participant signed our charter, which emphasizes authenticity and a strong connection to Antwerp. That first edition welcomed around 1,000 professional visitors—a promising beginning.

By the 2024 edition, we had tripled our visitor numbers and doubled the number of exhibitors. This remarkable growth reinforced our belief in the concept and proved that with dedicated effort, Antwerp Design Week could thrive as a cornerstone of the international design scene.
We added new dimensions to the event. For instance, The Club at Het Steen became our base camp where visitors could plan their routes and start or end their day with a coffee or a glass of champagne. Young creatives also joined us, bringing fresh energy to the event and offering new perspectives. It became a richer experience for everyone involved.'

What role does the city of Antwerp play in this event?
'Antwerp is more than just a backdrop—it's a partner. We see the city's vibrant culture, rich history, and welcoming spirit reflected in the event. ADW not only promotes the participating brands but also showcases Antwerp as a creative hub. Visitors enjoy the local hospitality, restaurants, and culture, reinforcing the city's reputation as an open and tolerant trade centre.'

What is your vision for the 2025 edition of Antwerp Design Week?
'We're committed to authenticity, sustainability, and meaningful connections. The 2025 edition will maintain its intimate atmosphere while delivering unexpected experiences. Exciting developments are underway—new locations, inspiring talks, engaging events, improved transport, and a more diverse program to explore.

We aim to celebrate Belgian design, with even more international collaboration. It's not only about products—it's about creating a meaningful experience. We want visitors to leave inspired and connected, not just with brands but with the essence of Belgian creativity and Antwerp.'

Who is behind the organization?
'While our team is small and manages much of the work under Emma's leadership as our project lead, the support from our partners is truly invaluable. We're fortunate to have Fedustria and Manuport providing both financial and expert support, apbc and FlandersDC offering creative guidance, VOCAST handling our press efforts, partners like HOOG Design raising awareness, and the city of Antwerp playing a key role in helping us grow and thrive.'
