Ikea has discontinued worldwide sales of the Byakorre rack, a reissue of the classic 1985 Guide shelving unit. The design, which was supposed to be available from February, is proving unstable and unfit to carry weights, as complaints from consumers, especially in the US, revealed. The cabinet is wobbly, leading to concerns about the safety and usability of the product. De Standaard reports.
The Byakorre rack.
The Guide cabinet, originally designed by Danish designer Niels Gammelgaard, was a big hit at Ikea in 1985. The new version, called Byakorre, would include the same features, such as reversible shelves with different colors. The relaunch was supposed to be another success 40 years after the original, but due to the instability of the new version, Ikea temporarily halted sales to solve the problem.
Ikea has not yet announced a new release date for the rack. Gammelgaard, who created more than 50 designs for the company between 1975 and 2005, was inspired by the simplicity of Scandinavian design and functional materials. The Guide cabinet is currently offered for 149 euros, a fraction of the price of vintage ones that cost much more on second-hand markets.
