Ikea demolishes first German store for modern rebuild

Ikea's first German store, located in Eching near Munich, is set to be demolished and rebuilt. According to Immobilien Zeitung, the Swedish furniture retailer is reviving its 2016 plans with modifications to create a more modern and future-proof facility.

The Eching branch, which opened in 1974 and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, will be replaced by a new building on the site of the current car park. The exact size of the new store has not been confirmed, but earlier plans proposed a retail area of 21,000 square metres. The project will include a "department warehouse" to facilitate online order collections.

Ikea had previously abandoned expansion plans in Eching in 2018 and instead sought a location in central Munich. However, last year, the company acquired Pasing Arcaden, a shopping centre in the city.

During construction, the existing store will remain operational until the new building is complete, after which the old structure will be demolished.
