UK sees record mattress imports in December 2024

The UK experienced its highest-ever monthly mattress imports in December 2024, with the value of shipments surpassing £22 million. This marked a 40 percent increase compared to the previous year, as revealed by HM Revenue & Customs data compiled by The Furnishing Report. For the full year, mattress imports grew by 7.5 percent, continuing a streak of annual increases that has lasted for 11 consecutive years. The last decline in mattress imports occurred in 2013.

The surge in December was primarily driven by a 47 percent rise in imports from China, reaching £7.1 million. Denmark, home to Tempur's manufacturing base, also saw a notable increase of 36 percent, amounting to £3.9 million. Other countries, such as Poland and Romania, also experienced double-digit increases, contributing to the overall growth. However, Ireland saw a slight decrease of 0.7 percent in mattress imports.

This uptick in mattress imports continues a long-standing trend, with the value of imports now significantly higher than the £62.4 million recorded in 2013, which was less than a third of the current import levels.
