Chengdu Snow Village, a tourist destination in the southwestern province of Sichuan, recently came under controversy after the local tourist board tried to simulate snow with cotton and soapsuds. The village, which is normally covered in snow during the winter months, faced higher temperatures this time, which prevented snow from falling during Chinese New Year from 28 January to 4 February. To create a snow-like atmosphere, the organisers covered the village's roofs with cotton, but this led to disappointment among visitors.

Photos of the village appeared on social media, where the white covering was clearly recognised as fake. Visitors complained about the deception, to which the organisation apologised and cleaned up the cotton. The village was temporarily closed to tourists. The tourist organisation promised a full refund for visitors and said the attempt to create a winter atmosphere did not have the desired result. The situation raises questions about the ethics of such misleading marketing practices.
