The household appliance market in France reached €9.6 billion in 2024, marking a 1% increase from 2023, according to a report by Gifam and NielsenIQ-GfK. However, the sector has seen contrasting trends, with small household appliances (PEM) experiencing strong growth, while large household appliances (GEM) declined.

PEM sales surged by 8% in value, reaching €4.03 billion with 53.5 million units sold. Key drivers included floor care appliances, which grew by 11.4%, food cooking appliances (+24.4%)—particularly air fryers—and beauty and well-being devices (+10%). Weather conditions also played a role, with increased humidity boosting sales of dehumidifiers (+63%) and mobile heaters (+13.5%).
GEM, however, saw a 3.9% decline, with 14.5 million appliances sold for €5.6 billion. The real estate crisis has significantly impacted this segment, particularly built-in kitchen appliances, which fell by 6.4% in value. In contrast, freestanding appliances saw a 1.7% increase in volume but a 2.2% decline in value.
Washing appliances were the only GEM category to grow (+1.3%), driven by a 13.2% rise in tumble dryer sales due to heat pump technology. Refrigeration saw a 7.7% drop, with refrigerators down 7%, freezers down 9.3%, and wine cellars down 16.3%. Cooking appliances declined by 6.3%, with ovens, hoods, microwaves, and hobs all losing value. However, hobs with integrated hoods grew by 17%, and steam cooking in ovens increased by 19% due to an expanding product range.
Gifam noted that while the sector faces challenges, innovative, high-value products continue to perform well despite broader economic pressures.
