During 2025, Fritz Hansen is celebrating seven decades of the Series 7 chair, a Danish design icon that resonates across cultures, generations, and styles. Designed in 1955 by Arne Jacobsen as the purest expression of his revolutionary plywood and steel-tubed chairs, it has been treasured ever since. A simple organic form of timeless aesthetic appeal, distinctive yet adaptable like a chameleon to its environment, it boasts an innovative structure providing both strength and comfort.
To mark the 70th anniversary, Fritz Hansen has planned a year of activities centred around the many and diverse natures of its most popular chair, known as the Series 7 worldwide and affectionately at home in Denmark as the Sevener. First up is the release of the 7:14 AM palette, a set of colours capturing a specific moment in time while encapsulating something eternal. Inspired by Danish light—ethereal, elusive, uplifting—the five colours mirror the spectrum of an elongated autumn sunrise.
'With "Ever the Sevener" we are celebrating seven decades of the Series 7 chair as well as getting people to see it in a different light. We wanted to re-open the conversation by highlighting its other name and tap into design and light with the 7:14 AM palette. Yes, you have seen it a lot, but have you really seen it? We aim to show different possibilities. This chair is such an icon, and the Danish light is like nowhere else. When you stack the chairs, you get a feel for this fluent sunrise factor like refracted light,' says Els Van Hoorebeeck, Creative Director at Fritz Hansen.
Later in 2025, Fritz Hansen will showcase other aspects of the Sevener's character, illustrating how its slender, curved shell—made from nine layers of pressure-moulded veneer—and slim yet strong steel-tubed legs offer near-endless adaptability. From crafted and rare leather chairs with hand-stitched details reminiscent of handbags or saddles to refurbished originals brought to new life through collaboration and circularity, the Sevener of the future will be seen through outsiders' eyes.
'It is the diversity of this chair that is the future. You can buy the Sevener because you like what it stood for in the past, you can be attracted to it because you discover it in the present, or you can fall for it because of what it has to offer in the future,' says Van Hoorebeeck. 'Everyone talks about sustainability, but this is the real thing—a chair that's been around for 70 years and will be around for another 70 years.'
The 7:14 AM palette is a limited-edition series available from March through 2025. The colours include 7:14 AM Blue, 7:14 AM Violet, 7:14 AM Pink, 7:14 AM Beige, and 7:14 AM Green. It is available with a new iridescent base, a zinc chrome finish that reflects the light and the colours of the shells, created especially for the limited-edition palette. The chair can also be purchased with a classic chrome base.
