Jaipur Rugs is proud to announce the acquisition of Shyam Ahuja, a luxury rug and textile brand with over five decades of heritage. This landmark deal includes both the personal collection of Shyam Ahuja and his entire design archive, securing what Jaipur Rugs calls the "jewel in the crown" of Indian carpet-making. The company intends to develop the brand as a separate entity with its own supply chain, ensuring its legacy continues with respect and innovation.
Founded in 1963, Shyam Ahuja was a pioneer in luxury rugs and textiles, particularly renowned for elevating the flat-woven dhurrie to an art form. His work gained international acclaim, with a strong following among A-list designers and decorators. His carpets adorned the homes of Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis, Gianni Versace, and even appeared in the famous confessional interview of the late Princess of Wales. His brand remains an enduring symbol of quiet luxury, understated elegance, and impeccable craftsmanship.
'We are thrilled to have acquired the exceptional brand, Shyam Ahuja, with his legacy known for timeless design, exceptional craftsmanship and unwavering commitment to quality,' said Yogesh Chaudhary, Director, Jaipur Rugs. 'We have a shared vision for preserving and elevating the artisanal wealth of our country. The brand has an extremely strong emotional connection with so many customers and patrons around the world, which we will harness to revive the glory days of Shyam Ahuja and re-establish its unique positioning at the top of the market, globally.'
Shyam Ahuja's legacy is built on bold, visionary design. His rugs, celebrated for their subtle colour palettes and sophisticated aesthetic, were inspired by sources as diverse as Versailles ceilings, Scottish tartans, and traditional Indian paisleys. His advertising campaigns were equally ahead of their time, setting new standards for imagery and branding in the luxury rug industry. By the 1990s, his rugs could be found in the homes of Oscar de la Renta, Anna Wintour, and some of the world's top decorators, including Bunny Williams.
The acquisition brings together two brands with deep artisanal roots and a commitment to craftsmanship. Established in 1978 by Nand Kishore Chaudhary, Jaipur Rugs has grown into India's largest handmade carpet manufacturer, with a network of 40,000+ artisans across 650+ villages and a presence in 85 countries. Significantly, 85% of its weavers are women, reinforcing its mission to empower rural communities. With 7,000 operational looms, Jaipur Rugs produces 700,000 square metres of rugs annually, selling over 100,000 units globally. The company operates 10 stores in India and international showrooms in Milan, London, Singapore, Dubai, Russia, and China.
Greg Foster, Artistic Director, Jaipur Rugs, shared his enthusiasm: 'I have long been an admirer of Shyam Ahuja and the cult status aura that surrounds the brand. His instantly recognisable dhurrie designs and sophisticated sensibility for colour make for the richest design archive to curate from. It gives me immense joy to see Jaipur Rugs acquire the jewel in the crown—a sleeping beauty that we intend to revive with great respect. It's an exciting moment in both our stories.'
While the revival and development plans will be announced in due course, business will continue as usual through showrooms in Mumbai, Delhi, and New York. This acquisition marks a significant step in Jaipur Rugs' mission to preserve and promote India's artisanal heritage while expanding its footprint in the global luxury market.
