Germany is still not prepared to take the necessary countermeasures to deal with major forest damage caused by drought, storms and fires, which will continue to occur as a result of climate change. For this reason, HDH, AGR, DFUV, DeSH and FVH from the Charter for Wood 2.0 have launched a joint call to politicians to put the issue back on the agenda in the coming legislative period.

In recent years, since the beginning of the major forest damage in 2018, it has not been possible to use the experiences gained to create the necessary political basis to avert major economic damage in the event of future damage events.
In particular, the topics of forest protection monitoring, wood transport and value-preserving wood storage must be addressed immediately at the federal level. Wood is an important strategic resource for Germany in times of moving away from fossil raw materials. Society cannot afford to endanger the added value from wood processing and the storage effect of the carbon bound in the wood through inadequate crisis prevention.
The issue of disaster management must be on the political agenda in the coming legislative period, because the effects of climate change on forests will continue to progress.
The associations will work together with the other affected stakeholders to sustainably improve crisis prevention and management in forests and wood.
The signatory associations are organising themselves within the framework of the Charter for Wood 2.0. There, experts from science and industry from the Forestry & Wood cluster develop ideas and proposed measures relating to the use of wood as a raw material in Germany.
The associations HDH, AGR, DFUV, DeSH and FVH joined the call.
