England rugby stars start successful furniture business

Former rugby union players Tom Wood and Alex Waller have transitioned into the furniture industry, launching Waller & Wood Woodworks, a business specialising in unique wooden furniture. The duo, who both previously played for Northampton Saints, established the company while still active in their rugby careers.

Tom Wood, who earned 50 caps for England, retired in 2022, while Alex Waller, a prop with a club record of 370 appearances, retired in 2024. What began as a hobby to complement their sports careers has grown into a thriving business, with the company now acquiring its first commercial premises. The pair secured a 3,820 sqft unit at 97 St James Mill Road, Northampton, for £383,500 to support the company's expansion.

Waller & Wood Woodworks produces a range of designer furniture, from bespoke large pieces to smaller accessories, and also accepts commissions for custom projects. Tom Bromwich, managing partner of Bromwich Hardy, the commercial property agents who assisted in the acquisition, commented, 'Tom and Alex have carved out a new career... and I have no doubt that this business will continue to grow.'

Hadland Chartered Surveyors and Max Engel & Co provided further support in the transaction, with James Williams at Moore & Tibbits Solicitors acting for Waller & Wood Woodworks. The company's growth reflects the success of their venture into the furniture industry following their rugby careers.
