Steensgaard stated that Fritz Hansen's overall health is good, despite facing challenges across markets. He believes the company must focus on innovation alongside its legacy. 'We have a strong heritage, but we have been too busy being an "important brand" that we have forgotten to be innovative,' he remarked. Van Hoorebeeck added, 'Understanding what we have been good at in the past is an important starting point for new designs in the future.'
The duo's priorities include keeping the brand's heritage relevant, embracing circularity in production, and developing contemporary products. Steensgaard highlighted the need for the company to focus on sustainability, stating, 'The best thing we can do for our grandchildren is make sure the things we make can last.'
Both appointments aim to balance Fritz Hansen's role as a manufacturer with its growing identity as a design brand. Looking to the future, Steensgaard emphasised growth potential in Asia, North America, and Europe. With a strong portfolio of timeless designs by icons such as Arne Jacobsen, Fritz Hansen aims to continue expanding their legacy.
As for what defines good design, Van Hoorebeeck believes it should evoke emotions, adding that 'if design leaves you feeling indifferent, then that's not good enough.' Steensgaard echoed this, stressing that good design should bring joy and stand the test of time.
