Kronospan acquires Romanian Sawmill from Ziegler Group

Kronospan has purchased the Romanian Sawmill ZG Timber Sebes S.R.L. from the Ziegler Group as part of the company's ongoing restructuring process. Although ZG Timber Sebes was not among the 27 Ziegler companies that filed for insolvency, the sale was managed by the Ziegler Group's insolvency administrator, Volker Böhm from Schultze & Braun.

Located in Sebes, western Romania, the Sawmill employs approximately 500 workers and produces high-quality sawn timber and wood pellets. Kronospan, a leading manufacturer of wood-based products, has confirmed that it will retain the site and all employees. The company plans to expand its product range with the addition of sawn timber.

Böhm emphasised that 'the sale of ZG Timber Sebes S.R.L. has successfully transferred all international Ziegler operations to well-known industry investors,' ensuring no job losses. The sale follows a structured investor process, targeting international investors. The financial details remain confidential, with the transaction pending approval from antitrust authorities.

Kronospan, which has been operating in Romania since 1998, has invested over €600 million in the country. It currently operates production sites in Brasov and Sebes, along with a logistics centre in Constanta. The acquisition strengthens Kronospan's position in the Romanian market and further diversifies its product offering.

The Ziegler Group, which had expanded aggressively in recent years, faced financial difficulties due to the impact of the Ukraine war and rising interest rates. At the time of the insolvency filings in November 2024, the group employed around 3,000 people across Germany, Sweden, and Romania.
