Interzum 2025 is set to explore the future of sustainable furniture design with the Trend Forum Function & Components, curated by Kristina Meyer and Thorsten Rosenstengel from byform produktdesign. Under the theme "Rethink Furniture – Less, but Better", the exhibition will highlight circular and bio-based solutions, aligning with the overarching trade fair theme, "Rethinking Resources".

A future-oriented trend forum
Building on the discussions from Interzum 2023, the Trend Forum will take another step forward in addressing the challenges facing the furniture fittings industry. 'One of the primary areas of focus will be the development of circular solutions that seamlessly integrate materials, technology and innovative ideas,' explain Meyer and Rosenstengel. A key challenge will be advancing bio-based materials for fittings. The forum will demonstrate how combining sustainable materials with cutting-edge technology and thoughtful design can lead to fully circular products.
For the first time, the forum will also explore the application of digital product passports in complex furniture designs. 'In the future, this tool will play a decisive role in making the origin of the materials used more transparent and making it easier for them to be fed back into the loop,' they add. The exhibition will provide practical insights into how these concepts can reshape the industry.
"Less, but Better" – A philosophy for circularity
Taking inspiration from Dieter Rams' famous design philosophy, the forum will examine how "less, but better" can be applied to modern production and marketing processes. Meyer and Rosenstengel emphasise that 'with future circularity requirements in mind, achieving the goal becomes much more feasible when a principle such as 'less, but better' is prioritised from the outset.' Simplifying manufacturing processes and ensuring products can be easily dismantled into their constituent materials will be key to achieving circularity.

Key themes and innovations at Interzum 2025
Located in Hall 10.2, the Function & Components Trend Forum will serve as a hub for innovation, bringing together industry leaders to showcase the latest advancements in sustainable furniture design. The curated content will offer both a visual and tactile experience, combining studies and market-ready products to inspire visitors and provide practical solutions. 'The aim is not only to provide inspiration, but also to showcase practical approaches and innovative concepts that will drive the industry forward,' say the curators.
Since Interzum 2023, Meyer and Rosenstengel have observed a shift in market attitudes towards sustainability. 'Sustainable improvements and solutions are being included in product development considerations from the outset, which illustrates that the awareness of the importance of environmentally friendly approaches is growing.' At the same time, companies are making a conscious effort to avoid greenwashing, focusing on transparency and realistic goals in their sustainability journey.
AI and the future of circular design
The exhibition will also explore how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the furniture industry. 'Numerous processes that a piece of furniture undergoes – from planning and production through to adaptive reuse – can be made more efficient through the use of modern technologies,' they explain. One example is digital twins, which allow for early detection of errors, improving material efficiency and optimising production. AI also enables highly tailored product development, ensuring solutions meet real market demands.
For these innovations to gain widespread adoption, Meyer and Rosenstengel stress that both businesses and consumers must embrace change. 'To spark successful change on every front, a fresh perspective on aesthetics, an increased appreciation of the value of repairs and a stronger shift towards more sustainable consumer habits are needed.'
As Interzum 2025 approaches, the Function & Components Trend Forum promises to be a must-visit for industry professionals looking to explore the future of sustainable design.
