George and Williamina Hay, of WH Trading Ltd aged 65 and 61, ran the Peterhead company, which specialised in selling adjustable beds and chairs, primarily to elderly and vulnerable customers. The business went into liquidation in autumn 2023, leaving nearly £100,000 in outstanding customer orders. The investigation found that the company had taken payments for products it had not ordered from suppliers, despite knowing the orders could not be fulfilled.
Mike Smith, chief investigator at The Insolvency Service, stated that both directors had "fallen significantly short of the standards we expect of company directors", which led to their disqualification until March 2032.
