It was the year 2000 when, for the first time, the light silhouette of LEM was unveiled at Milan Furniture Fair. Since then, the "ring that floats in the air" designed by Shin&Tomoko Azumi for Lapalma, has become the most representative expression of that timeless design that characterises all the brand's collections.
To celebrate its first 25 years, the company is presenting it once again on the occasion of Milan Design Week, in three new galvanic finishes, in the colours brushed black, blue and green. These are added to the already vast range of options available. An aesthetic evolution, with a contemporary appeal, that does not affect the refined and minimalist identity of a stool that, while not following fashion trends, always remains up-to-date.
'We believe in a design that lasts over time,' says Romano Marcato - co-founder and owner of Lapalma. 'This is why we wanted LEM to be not only a functional object, but a disruptive sign that could cross the ages without ever losing its beauty, purity and uniqueness. These 25 years of success have proven us right'.
A classic in the contract sector, selected by architects, interior designers and contractors for projects of international relevance - including the Munich BMW Museum, Schiphol Airport (NL), the Library of Birmingham and Google HQ in Japan - Lapalma's stool boasts, among its numerous recognitions, the acquisition in 2008 in the permanent exhibition of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
Making a single piece and a single frame weld seemed an impossible challenge,' explains Romano Marcato. We worked hard to find the bending parameters, that millimetric precision that gives rise to the absolute simplicity of LEM'.
Today, when it only takes fifty seconds to shape the continuous, acrobatic line that characterises it and defines its uniqueness, despite the many attempts at imitation, LEM, now in its twenty-fifth year, is still the symbol of that durability, in time and taste, that the company relentlessly pursues.
In addition to the Salone del Mobile, LEM in its new finishes is also presented at the Fuorisalone in Via Gorani in the 5vie district, by Lapalma for Architects, for the SPACETIME. A journey through time in the name of timeless design event.
