Interview with Asian Design House: decorative lighting & home décor

'We are expanding our creative horizons through global collaborations: USA, Europe, Australia and Thailand'

Asian Design House Co., Ltd. was founded in 2004 with a mission to create distinctive decorative lighting and home décor products that blend exceptional craftsmanship, high quality, and affordability for a global audience.

At the heart of our brand is a deep respect for nature. Our core philosophy is to utilize natural resources in a sustainable way, transforming them into modern designs that celebrate their raw beauty. In 2006, we introduced our first wooden lamps inspired by organic forms found in nature. Now, in our 21th year, we have grown significantly, gaining recognition from international clients and partners who share our passion for nature-driven design. Today, our products are sold in over 70 countries worldwide.

Asian Design House is led by Korakot Ekthanutt (Bow), a Thai entrepreneur with extensive international experience in Singapore, the UK, and Denmark. With a strong passion for art and design, Bow always aspired to be in this industry. Upon returning to Thailand, she recognized the country's vast natural resources and rich tradition of handicrafts, inspiring her to establish Asian Design House Co., Ltd. and its signature brand, O'THENTIQUE.

You work extensively with natural materials like driftwood and wood. How do you ensure that your production process remains sustainable and environmentally friendly?
'At Asian Design House, sustainability is at the core of our production process. We use natural and sustainable materials such as wood, rattan, seagrass, ceramics, palm leaves, and marble to craft our lamps. Our commitment to ethical sourcing ensures that the materials we use are responsibly harvested, preserving the environment while maintaining the natural beauty of our designs.

We are committed to eco-friendly process beyond just the materials. We have implemented eco-friendly packing for our lamps. We also prioritize safety, quality, and ethical standards in our manufacturing. All our lamps are CE, UL, CUL, UKCA, ROHS, and REACH certified, ensuring they meet international environmental and safety regulations. Additionally, our factory is SEDEX compliant, reflecting our dedication to responsible business practices and fair labor standards.'

Where do you draw inspiration for your unique lamp designs?
'Our design process begins with a deep appreciation for nature and the rich materials available in Thailand and across the Asian region, including hardwood, rattan, water hyacinth, sedge, and seagrass. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, flowers, sea life, the earth, sky, moon, and sun, we craft designs that capture the beauty of organic forms and elements.

From these inspirations, we explore possibilities for both design and production, ensuring each creation aligns with our brand's vision and market demands. We blend Thai cultural influences with contemporary aesthetics to create modern yet timeless pieces. By integrating traditional Thai craftsmanship with advanced manufacturing techniques, we produce meticulously crafted designs that seamlessly fit into today's evolving lifestyles—offering both beauty and functionality.'

You export your products worldwide. What design trends are you currently seeing in the international market, and how do you adapt your collections to these trends?
'While our designs are primarily rooted in contemporary and modern aesthetics, the growing emphasis on sustainability over the past few years has reshaped industry trends. Today, sustainable design is not just about using natural materials, it also integrates modern innovations such as using LED, Rechargeable, Remote control etc to enhance functionality and efficiency.

As our products are crafted from natural materials, we have embraced these advancements by incorporating features such as rechargeable systems, remote controls, and LED lights, ensuring they align with modern lifestyles. Additionally, we have adopted self-assembly / knocked down design principles to reduce packaging size, minimize material waste, and make transportation more cost-efficient.'

Your lamps are CE and UL approved. Can you share some insights into the process and challenges of combining natural materials with modern safety standards?
'Combining natural materials with modern safety standards like CE and UL approval presents unique challenges, but it is a crucial part of our process. At Asian Design House, we are committed to achieving the perfect balance between aesthetics and safety.

Natural materials such as wood, handwoven fibers, and marble bring distinctive beauty to our designs, but integrating them into certified lighting products requires careful planning. In some cases, these materials need to be treated or modified to meet strict safety standards while preserving their original aesthetic appeal.

We invest significantly in obtaining these certifications—both in terms of financial resources and dedicated expertise. Every design undergoes careful consideration from the outset to ensure compliance with stringent safety regulations. Each new product is sent for CE testing, covering aspects such as electrical safety, heat resistance, weight-bearing capacity, and tilt stability. Additionally, for UL certification, our factory undergoes quarterly inspections by UL inspectors to verify that our lamps consistently meet global safety and quality standards.

By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern compliance requirements, we continue to create innovative, sustainable, and internationally certified lighting solutions that uphold the highest standards of safety and design.'

What can we expect from Asian Design House in the future?
'At Asian Design House, our commitment to natural materials remains at the heart of our brand. However, we are also exploring innovative ways to integrate new materials into our designs. Over the past year, we have begun experimenting with eco-plastic combined with natural elements, creating unique and sustainable design possibilities. Moving forward, we will continue to explore materials that align with modern lifestyles while maintaining our dedication to craftsmanship and sustainability.

In addition to materials, we are incorporating advanced lighting technologies such as LED systems, rechargeable solutions, remote controls, sensors, and solar-powered lighting. This evolution allows us to transform our craft into "innovative craft", blending tradition with modern functionality.

We are also expanding our creative horizons through collaborations with design studios, both in Thailand and Europe, that bring fresh and contemporary perspectives. These partnerships challenge us to push beyond our existing boundaries, fostering bold and distinctive new designs that redefine our aesthetic while staying true to our core values.'
