European Commission launches anti-dumping investigation into Brazilian plywood

The European Commission has opened an anti-dumping investigation into Brazilian softwood plywood imports, following concerns raised by the Softwood Plywood Consortium (SPC) regarding unfair pricing. The investigation aims to assess whether Brazilian producers are selling plywood at prices lower than its normal value in Brazil, a practice known as "dumping."

Imports of Brazilian softwood plywood to the EU have surged in recent years, with Brazilian producers overtaking European suppliers as the primary source. Brazil now accounts for nearly half of the softwood plywood sold in the EU, exporting surplus plywood due to a shrinking domestic market and restrictions in other regions, such as the United States. SPC, which represents four major European plywood producers, argues that these imports are being sold at unfairly low prices, undermining the European market.

Jarosław Michniuk, President of Paged Morąg, a key member of SPC, expressed support for the investigation, stating that the European Commission's decision to address this issue is crucial for maintaining fair competition in the EU market. He highlighted that plywood in Brazil is more expensive than in Europe, further underlining the alleged dumping practices.

The Commission's investigation will also lead to the registration of all Brazilian plywood imports at EU borders, allowing for the retroactive imposition of additional duties if the investigation confirms unfair pricing. The outcome of this inquiry is expected to significantly impact the future of the softwood plywood industry in the EU.
