A woman from Merelbeke-Melle (Belgium) fell victim to a fraudulent Dutch webshop offering garden furniture at extremely low prices. Instead of the garden sets she ordered, she received only an envelope with a smiley face. Her paid amount of 350 euros was lost.
The woman was lured via Facebook and Instagram by ads from the Dutch website defabriek1991.nl, which offered garden furniture at discounts of up to 90%. After her order and payment, she received an apology email about delay, followed by a track-and-trace code. However, the final delivery consisted only of a token smiley face.
Attempts to contact the webshop proved fruitless. Customer service does not respond to emails and a phone number is missing from the website. An investigation by Het Laatste Nieuws revealed that the company behind the website, Global Transaction Limited, is based in Hong Kong and has no physical presence in the Netherlands. A similar website, adorna.nl, also appears to offer products on the same terms.
