Interview with Isabel Torres, Founder of Mambo Unlimited Ideas

'We’re also working on a pop-up shop in the U.S., which is a big step for us'

Mambo Unlimited Ideas, a design brand based in Lisbon (Portugal), seamlessly blends traditional Portuguese craftsmanship with contemporary design. The company specialises in creating a wide range of customisable furniture, upholstery, and outdoor collections, primarily for contract projects. What sets Mambo Unlimited Ideas apart is their strong relationship with local artisans and their deep commitment to Portuguese cultural heritage. Every piece designed by the brand carries a bit of that rich history, paired with bold creativity and a fresh, modern touch.

Bold Showcase
This year's Maison & Objet fair presented an exciting opportunity for Mambo Unlimited Ideas to showcase their latest collections. 'Maison & Objet 2025 was a great opportunity for us to introduce our new pieces,' says Isabel Torres, Founder of Mambo Unlimited Ideas. 'Among the highlights was the Mood modular couch, which stood out. Inspired by 70s space-age design, it's fully customisable, offering clients endless possibilities. The response was very positive.'

In addition to the Mood couch, Mambo Unlimited Ideas also presented the Mimi swivel chairs and a new outdoor collection, which brought fresh perspectives to their already dynamic range. 'The Mood couch and outdoor pieces received a lot of attention, especially from clients seeking something different and adaptable,' Isabel adds. 'Overall, it was a good fair, and we're excited to see these designs being used in new projects.'

Growing Interest
The reaction from visitors at the fair was very positive. 'There was a lot of interest in our new pieces,' Isabel notes. 'Visitors appreciated the flexibility and design of the Mood couch, and our outdoor pieces really stood out. We had steady interest throughout the fair, and sales were strong, which is always a good sign.'

The level of interest was more than just surface-level; there was a genuine engagement from clients. 'It was great to see how well our designs resonated with them,' Isabel adds. 'The fair was a success, not just in terms of sales, but in terms of building strong relationships with engaged clients.'

Key Trends
Mambo Unlimited Ideas has noticed a growing shift toward certain trends, particularly the demand for customisable, sustainable designs. 'Clients are increasingly drawn to pieces that feel personal to them,' says Isabel. 'There's a growing appreciation for handmade craftsmanship, and this was very evident at the fair.'

Sustainability is another key theme that continues to emerge. 'We've made a lot of changes in our policies to become more sustainable. It's not just a trend; it feels like the direction the industry is moving in. Clients want well-made, customisable, and sustainable products that they can connect with personally.'

Exciting projects and future collaborations
Mambo Unlimited Ideas has several developments in the works for 2025. 'We're working on some client projects in Europe, the US, and the Middle East, and we're looking forward to seeing them come to life,' the Founder reveals. 'We also have some new collaborations on the horizon with a design team, but we can't share the details just yet. Stay tuned!'

Expanding their outdoor collection is a major focus for the year ahead. 'Last year marked our first launch of outdoor pieces, and the response has been fantastic,' Isabel says. 'We're excited to continue developing more outdoor designs that resonate with our clients.'

Looking Ahead: Milan and Beyond
As the year progresses, Mambo Unlimited Ideas has plans in place. 'We're focusing on expanding our outdoor collection and continuing to develop customisable pieces that meet our clients' needs,' Isabel shares. 'One of the big highlights this year is Milan's Salone del Mobile, where we will be showcasing our work at Pavilion 18 B11. We're also working on a pop-up shop in the U.S., which is a big step for us.'

A Larger Vision
Mambo Unlimited Ideas is part of a larger group that includes Theia Tiles, Utu Lamps, and Dooq Details, with much happening across all the brands this year. 'Utu Lamps has just launched a new lighting collection made with lacquered metal and LED hoses,' Isabel explains. 'It's a bold, modern direction that's quite different from what we've done before. At Theia Tiles, we introduced a handmade terracotta tile collection designed by Studio Pepe, bringing a fresh take on artisanal ceramics. Dooq is also unveiling a lineup of new pieces this year, all deeply rooted in artistry and craftsmanship. Across all our brands, we're excited to keep pushing creativity and quality forward.
