EP2216834 protects Chip Scale Package (CSP) technology used in high-luminance automotive lighting, including headlights and exterior lights. EP3267494 concerns LEDs designed for high reliability and efficiency, particularly in automotive interior lighting and backlighting. These patented technologies are integral to Nichia's automotive LED products.
The court also ruled against Endrich Bauelemente Vertriebs GmbH, a German distributor of the infringing Dominant LED products, ordering it to cease sales, recall and destroy the products, and compensate Nichia for damages. The decisions are final and cannot be appealed.
Nichia holds family patents for EP2216834 in Japan, the US, the UK, France, Italy, the Netherlands, China, India, Taiwan, Korea, and Russia. EP3267494 is also protected in Germany and Brazil. The company has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its intellectual property and will take legal action against infringers where necessary.
