Carl Hansen & Søn boosts its presence in the Frederiksstaden district of Copenhagen by taking over historic premises in Bredgade 33. The prominent address overlooking Sankt Annæ Plads was previously occupied by Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers and will now house Danish design and craftsmanship of the highest calibre.
For more than a decade, Carl Hansen & Søn has been showcasing outstanding design and passionate craftsmanship in Bredgade, and the store has grown over the years to comprise a total of three properties on both sides of the street. Now, the entire collection of furniture, lamps, rugs and accessories is gathered in the newly opened flagship store. Going forward, customers will be able to explore more than 600 square metres of craftsmanship and design dispersed over two floors.
'Bredgade features an abundance of galleries, antique dealers and design shops, which makes it an essential location for Carl Hansen & Søn. When moving into these premises, we're occupying a building that embodies a unique history of art and design arising from its 75 years of art auctions. This couldn't be a better match for Carl Hansen & Søn, and we look forward to showcasing our entire collection of exceptional craftsmanship.' - Inger Marie Jensen Hansen, Retail CCO, Carl Hansen & Søn.
The building in Bredgade 33 was built in 1795 in classicist style with columns, arches, cornices and reliefs. Over the years, the address has housed prominent Copenhageners such as author Adam Oehlenschläger and shipowner and DFDS co-founder H.P. Prior. But when Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers bought the property in 1947, they sealed the property's renown as a prominent site in the history of Danish art and culture.
The premises have been undergoing thorough refurbishment over the past year and have solid herringbone parquet flooring, a ceiling height of 4.5 metres and curved window bays opening out towards Sankt Annæ Plads, from where the light flows in. A majestic staircase in the centre of the store leads up to a mezzanine, where the exhibition continues and includes access to a large roof terrace that will be the setting for the outdoor furniture collection.
'We opened our first and, at the time, only store in Bredgade back in 2013. Since then, we have opened no less than twenty-three Carl Hansen & Søn stores around the world. But Bredgade will always be special to us, which is why we are very delighted to relocate further down the street in premises that brilliantly complement our collection.' - Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third generation owner of Carl Hansen & Søn.
