IKEA Spain, part of the Ingka Group, and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao have launched "HomeForOurPlanet", a nationwide ideas competition aimed at young people aged 18 to 35. The initiative seeks to mobilise a new generation to develop creative solutions that combat climate change from home.
Laura Durán, Business Development and Sustainability General Director at IKEA Spain, emphasised the urgent need for action: 'The climate crisis is an undeniable reality that continues to affect the whole planet. At IKEA Spain and across IKEA we have a strong commitment to sustainability, and we believe there is still time to change course and take action in the face of the climate crisis. With this initiative, we want to invite young people to contribute with creative and original ideas that inspire action against climate change from home.'
The competition calls for participants to submit a video (up to 3 minutes long) presenting their idea on how to reduce environmental impact or adapt to climate change from home. Entries can be submitted via homeforourplanet.com before 17 March 2025.
Awards and workshops at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
The five most original and innovative ideas will be selected, with each winner receiving €2,000. Additionally, the winners will take part in Design Thinking workshops at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, where they will further develop their concepts alongside design and environmental science students from the Basque Country.
'For a museum like ours, focused on reducing emissions from all our activity with the commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, taking part in this project that encourages us to listen to young people is undoubtedly inspiring,' said Lekha Hileman Waitoller, Curator of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and representative of the museum's Gu-Zero group, which promotes environmental sustainability initiatives. 'We are looking forward to receiving new ideas that help us reflect and improve our planet.'
The competition will culminate in a final event on 12 May 2025 at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, where a multidisciplinary judging panel composed of specialists from IKEA Spain, the museum, and independent experts will announce the winning project.
IKEA Spain's commitment to climate action
The "HomeForOurPlanet" initiative is part of a broader collaboration between IKEA Spain and major cultural institutions. Throughout the year, IKEA Spain has worked with museums such as Disseny Hub Barcelona and the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid to explore the evolution of the home from the 15th to the 20th century through a curated selection of masterpieces.
As the largest IKEA retailer in 31 countries, Ingka Group continues to push for accelerated climate action, working alongside governments, private sector partners, and the public to drive sustainable change.
