UK furniture manufacturing sees decline in January output

Furniture manufacturing output in the UK declined in January 2025, marking a return to negative year-on-year figures. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the turnover for UK furniture producers was £741 million in January, a 3.4% decrease compared to January 2024. This drop represents the fourth decline in the past five months, with December being the only exception. However, the December figures were revised down from an initial 3.6% increase to just a 0.8% rise.

The decline in January was primarily driven by a 2.7% decrease in turnover from goods intended for domestic consumption, along with a significant 16% drop in export sales. The data is based on the ONS's monthly index of production series, which covers residential and contract furniture products under the Standard Industry Classification (SIC) code 31. This includes office and shop furniture, kitchen furniture, mattresses, and other types of furniture.

The ongoing decline reflects broader challenges faced by the sector, as manufacturers continue to grapple with reduced demand both domestically and in export markets.
