UK mattress imports decline in January after Tempur surge in 2024

UK mattress imports saw a decline in January 2025, with distributors and retailers purchasing fewer foreign-made mattresses compared to the same month in 2024. According to data from HMRC compiled by The Furnishing Report, £17.1 million worth of foam and sprung mattresses were imported, a 6.4% drop from January 2024.

Chinese mattress shipments rose by 2.3%, amounting to £5.4 million. However, imports from Denmark, home of Tempur's Dan-Foam plant, fell by 42%, reaching just £2.6 million. It is important to note that January 2024 had seen an unusually high spike in Danish imports, with the current figures still ahead or on par with the three previous years.

Meanwhile, imports from Ireland dropped by more than 20% compared to last year, while both Romania and Turkey reported significant increases in mattress imports, with double-digit percentage growth compared to January 2024. This shift in import patterns follows a period of unusually high imports in the previous year, particularly from Tempur's Danish operations.

Overall, the January 2025 figures highlight a cooling in mattress imports after the exceptional surge seen in 2024, particularly from Denmark.
