Roca Group sets sustainability benchmark with world's first zero-emission sanitary ceramics facility

Roca Group, a global leader in bathroom solutions, continues to drive innovation and sustainability in the industry. The company has been awarded the prestigious Platinum Medal from EcoVadis, placing it among the top 1% of over 150,000 companies assessed worldwide for sustainability performance. In a significant milestone, Roca Group has also established the world's first CO₂-free sanitary ceramics production facility in Gmunden, Austria, setting a new environmental benchmark for the sector.

The Gmunden facility, which began operations in 2023, features an electric tunnel kiln and has already attained Cradle to Cradle Certified® Circularity at the Bronze level. This achievement makes Roca Group the first company globally to secure this certification for its products.

A vision for modular and sustainable construction
Speaking at the ISH international bathroom fair in Frankfurt, Roca Group CEO Alberto Magrans outlined the company's commitment to specialisation by product verticals, prefabrication, and modularity to meet the growing demand for efficient and sustainable construction.

Magrans emphasised the role of modular manufacturing systems, developed through the company's leading brands, Roca and Laufen. 'The future of construction lies in modular solutions that optimise resources and reduce environmental impact,' he stated.

Innovation and sustainability at the forefront
The company continues to invest in research across key areas such as age-appropriate bathroom solutions, water filtration, IoT connectivity, personal and public hygiene, and modular bathroom furnishings.

With its global brands, Roca and Laufen, Roca Group integrates a diverse range of product categories to deliver total bathroom solutions. 'Our strength lies in our ability to master multiple product verticals and combine them into holistic bathroom concepts,' Magrans noted.

"Form Follows Social Relevance" – a new design philosophy
For Marc Viardot, Roca Group's Marketing and Design Director, design is driven by more than function—it must also reflect social relevance. 'The high social relevance of the bathroom is at the heart of our product development. It's not just "form follows function," but "form follows social relevance,"'he explained.

Renowned designer Yves Béhar showcased his groundbreaking study of a ceramic washbasin produced using the new e-Kiln—a design he describes as 'nothing less than the reinvention of the washbasin.' Additional presentations at ISH included:

  • Jaenette Altherr's Meridian holistic bathroom concept (for Roca)
  • Stefan Diez's Kay faucet range (for Roca)
  • Peter Wirz's Laufen ProX collection, a democratic design approach for modern bathrooms

Showcasing sustainable design
Roca and Laufen presented their latest design concepts at ISH 2025:

  • Roca's stand, designed by Barcelona-based firm Mesura, reflects Mediterranean architectural heritage through a blend of simplicity, warmth, and technology.
  • Laufen's immersive exhibition, developed by Norwegian studio Snøhetta, offers visitors an interactive journey through Matter Spaces, exploring system solutions that integrate resource conservation, new hygiene standards, and digital technologies.

With these initiatives, Roca Group reaffirms its leadership in sustainability, innovation, and cutting-edge design, setting new industry standards for the future.
