Retail job losses in the UK reaches quarter million over five years

The number of retail jobs in 2024 fell to its lowest level since records began in 1996, despite overall employment in the economy continuing to grow.

According to the latest report from the ONS, there were 2.88 million retail jobs in December 2024, typically the peak period due to seasonal hiring. The four-quarter average stood at 2.84 million, marking a decline of 70,000 compared to the previous year and 249,000 over the past five years.

The figures show a significant drop in both part-time and full-time retail employment. On a four-quarter average, there were 1.50 million part-time and 1.34 million full-time jobs. Full-time positions fell by 106,000 over five years, while part-time roles declined by 142,000.

Helen Dickinson, Chief Executive of the British Retail Consortium, warned that the situation could worsen due to rising wage costs. She stated, 'Last October's Budget forced retailer wage bills up by over £5bn,' adding that increases in employer NICs and the National Living Wage have made recruitment more expensive. A survey of retail finance directors found that half were considering hiring freezes or job cuts.

Dickinson highlighted that job losses would disproportionately affect part-time workers, with up to 160,000 additional part-time roles at risk within three years. She described flexible retail jobs as "an important stepping stone" for those entering or returning to the workforce.

She further cautioned that uncertainty surrounding the Growth and Skills Levy and the Employment Rights Bill could make it harder to offer part-time roles or retraining opportunities. Furthermore, she urged the government to ensure that policies support recruitment and training, stating that 'the industry can help provide routes back into work for those who need it.'
