Abitzai, the premium brand of Ceramica Mediterranea, is set to present its latest collection, Origini, at Fuorisalone 2025. This new collection continues the brand's mission to blend heritage, culture, and contemporary design, showcasing Mediterranean identity through unique ceramic surfaces. The exhibition will take place at JRK Design District on San Giovanni Sul Muro street.
Since its founding in 2001, Ceramica Mediterranea has been a pioneer in sustainable ceramic production. The company, led by Bernhard and Claudia Mazohl, has transformed its factory in Guspini, southern Sardinia, into a reference point for high-quality, eco-friendly Italian ceramics. As the only producer of zero-kilometre porcelain stoneware in Italy, Ceramica Mediterranea upholds its commitment to sustainability by utilising local raw materials and low-impact production processes.
Abitzai: a tribute to Mediterranean identity
Established in 2021, Abitzai embodies Italian elegance and the deep cultural heritage of the Mediterranean. The name, derived from an ancient Sardinian dialect, means 'to keep on, to enliven, to sow.' Through its collections, Abitzai seeks to preserve and reinterpret traditional craftsmanship, offering timeless designs inspired by the region's landscapes, history, and art.
The Origini collection remains true to this ethos, drawing from the Mediterranean as a meeting place of cultures and traditions. As sociologist Franco Cassano once wrote, it is a space 'where modernity can learn the sense of limit, where the desire for infinity meets the measure of man.'
'With Origini, we want to tell an untold story, made of ancient symbols and signs of our ancestors, which become fertile ground for the imagination,' explains Claudia Mazohl. 'Through the two collections, Areale and Tibula, we propose a contemporary language that goes beyond formal conventions. Signs and new material surfaces, in a fusion of perception and mirage, of landscapes suspended between appearance and memory.'
A fusion of tradition and innovation
Origini is composed of two distinct sub-collections:
- Areale, featuring a fluid texture of signs and symbols that oscillate between reality and imagination.
- Tibula, inspired by the ancient city located at Sardinia's northernmost point, a historical crossroads of civilisations.
The collection's intricate decorations arise from a fusion of coloured glazes and precious metals, applied to a solid porcelain stoneware base. This technique creates surfaces with depth and radiance, offered in an array of hues from warm neutrals to sea green, earthy terracotta, and volcanic anthracite. Available in two formats—full field on 60x120 cm tiles and semi-full with vertical cut—Origini is designed to integrate seamlessly into modern architectural spaces, complemented by backgrounds in natural tones.
With Origini, Abitzai continues to celebrate Mediterranean heritage through exquisite ceramic surfaces. The collection embodies a dialogue between past and present, embracing the richness of difference and the power of memory through fine craftsmanship and sustainable innovation.
In addition to Fuorisalone, Ceramica Mediterranea will also participate in dOT–design Outdoor Texture, organised by VG Crea in the Brera Design District's San Marco architectural complex. The event will highlight the theme of "matter," showcasing a 400-square-metre installation featuring high-laying porcelain stoneware slabs from the company's various collections.
