&Tradition launches the X coffee table by Hvidt & Mølgaard

Designed in 1959, the X coffee table exemplifies the pinnacle of Hvidt & Mølgaard's work as designers. Drawn from family archives and reissued into &Tradition's classics collection, the veneered oak table combines innovative craftsmanship with a refined, minimalist aesthetic that remains as relevant today as it was over six decades ago.

Originally conceived as part of a matching set, the X chair-which also sits in &Tradition's Hvidt & Mølgaard collection-and the X coffee table were designed to complement each other. The table draws its distinctive design from the more than 3,000-year-old Egyptian folding chairs, a source of inspiration that has significantly influenced Danish architects throughout history.

A testament to the meticulous craftsmanship of Hvidt & Mølgaard, the X coffee table features an understated yet elegant X-profile, bound together with a strict metal frame that ensures both stability and aesthetic appeal. The lacquered oak veneer tabletop is distinguished by an intricately shaped raised edge, crafted from solid oak. Inspired by Japanese woodworking techniques, the curved perimeter is a defining feature which lends the piece a sophisticated expression.

The table's construction is based on the same principles as the X chair. The seamless blend of materials and concepts showcases the duo's exceptional ability to create functional art. The table was intended to be large enough to comfortably accommodate four people, providing ample space for conversation over a drink and a pipe of tobacco - a reflection of the social culture of the time.

The X coffee table is available in lacquered oak with walnut inserts, with matt black powder-coated steel details that enhance its timeless appeal.
