Danish furniture entrepreneur reflects on fortune made and lost

A Danish entrepreneur has reflected on his financial journey, describing how it took decades to build his fortune and a decade to lose it.

The businessman, Knud B. Troelsen, who recently turned 80, is known for founding a well-established kitchen brand, Kvik, in 1983. In 2005, he sold the company to a Swedish group, earning around DKK 300 million. Despite this success, the years that followed proved challenging, as he ventured into various projects, mainly within the construction industry.

Post-sale, he became involved in 24 different business initiatives. However, the financial crisis had a significant impact, leading to the closure of several companies. One such project was Hjem, a prefabricated house manufacturer founded in 2002, which went bankrupt in 2011 after financial difficulties.

Reflecting on his career, he stated: 'I spent 40 years making a fortune of 300 million with the sale, and then I spent 10 years furnishing it.' Despite the setbacks, he expressed no bitterness, valuing the experiences gained throughout his career.

In recent years, the entrepreneur has focused on sustainable housing. In 2023, he founded Tiny Choice, a company that produces micro-houses using eco-friendly materials. Despite recording a modest loss of 10,000 kroner in its first year, he remains optimistic about the future of the venture.

The entrepreneur's resilience and continued passion for innovation reflect his enduring spirit, as he remains hopeful that his latest project will succeed.
