'Doing industry means making culture'

Salone del Mobile.Milano 2025 kicks off with groundbreaking designs and global innovation

The 63rd edition of Salone del Mobile.Milano, running from 8th to 13th April at Fiera Milano Rho, has officially launched, showcasing over 2,100 exhibitors across 169,000 square meters of exhibition space. The event continues to cement its status as the global landmark for design, drawing participants from over 150 countries, with 168 new brands and 91 returning exhibitors.

This year's theme, "Thought for Humans", created by Dentsu Creative Italy and inspired by the American artist photographer Bill Durgin, explores the fusion of materials such as light, wood, metal, fabric, and bioplastic with human skin. Durgin's work highlights themes of sustainability, harmony, and connection.

The event is enriched by a diverse Cultural Program, featuring four high-profile projects. These include "Mother", an installation by Robert Wilson at the Museo della Pietà Rondanini, in dialogue with Michelangelo's masterpiece, and Es Devlin's "Library of Light", a collaboration with Pinacoteca di Brera. Also featured are Paolo Sorrentino's "La dolce attesa", reflecting on the concept of waiting, and Pierre-Yves Rochon's "Villa Héritage", a tribute to Venice's hotel business and Luchino Visconti's legacy.

The Euroluce exhibition, which returns this year with 306 exhibitors, remains a major highlight, offering a platform for technological innovation and sustainability in lighting design. The "Euroluce International Lighting Forum" (10-11 April) will feature over 20 international experts on topics ranging from solar design to plant neurobiology, showcasing the interdisciplinary approach to sustainable design.

The SaloneSatellite section also returns, celebrating 25 years of supporting emerging talent under the theme "New Craftsmanship: A New World", with 700 designers from 36 countries exploring the evolution of handmade design. The four key events within the Salone include Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Salone del Complemento d'Arredo, Workplace3.0, and S.Project, all focusing on a future of aesthetic innovation and functional design.

The Formafantasma Arena presents "Drafting Futures. Conversations about Next Perspectives", offering a series of discussions with leading design figures such as Es Devlin, Bjarke Ingels, and Paolo Sorrentino. These conversations will explore crucial issues related to urban planning, hospitality, and the future of design.

During the event, the Design Kiosk returns to Piazza della Scala, offering a space for daily meetings with design experts and key industry figures.

In her opening address, Maria Porro, President of Salone del Mobile, emphasised the importance of the Salone as a platform where companies can build long-term relationships and grow in the global market. She noted, 'Doing industry means making culture,' underscoring the Salone's role in shaping the cultural and economic landscape of design. Claudio Feltrin, President of FederlegnoArredo, highlighted the importance of defending Italy's furniture sector, noting that the "product amounting to 17 billion euros" is a testament to Italy's design power.

Giuseppe Sala, Mayor of Milan, welcomed the event, acknowledging the city's strength and commitment to the design industry. Adolfo Urso, Minister for Business and Made in Italy, praised the Salone as a symbol of Italy's creative resilience.

As Salone del Mobile.Milano 2025 unfolds, it continues to play a pivotal role in pushing the boundaries of design while fostering a global dialogue on sustainability, creativity, and innovation in the industry.
