Abundance must be governed, and perhaps this is why the Italian Garden exists. Another Italian trait is the inclination to preserve, which means that the peninsula is literally dotted with noble palaces and manor houses whose gardens are still lovingly tended, outlined by boxwood hedges, and speckled with lush flowerbeds and generous orchards.
But the fact remains that wherever abundance is not guided by a specific design, you can enjoy the pleasure of its spontaneity. The fragrant jasmine blossoms in Mediterranean courtyards or the wildflowers of the countryside in central Italy. Meadows invaded by spring bloom in the mountains, or petal-covered streets in cities. It still hasn't been made into an artform, like in Japan, but the Italian spring is moving, sweet, and fragrant. So beautiful in fact that Italians are increasingly tempted by the autumn foliage: they find it more refined.
