The Shaker movement, celebrated for its functional and unembellished approach to craftsmanship, had a profound impact on Mogensen's design ethos. He admired their dedication to creating furniture that was "both functional and free of superfluous ornamentation," a philosophy closely aligned with his own. This shared approach informed many of Mogensen's designs, which remain cornerstones of Danish modernism.
The first reissue is the BM80 Shaker Table Series, originally designed in 1961. Conceived to complement Mogensen's iconic Spanish Chair, the table's height was meticulously aligned with the armrests of the chair – "a subtle, yet deliberate gesture." Crafted in FSC-certified solid oak, the collection includes coffee tables in two heights and in both round and square forms. The series highlights the depth of Fredericia's archives and Mogensen's vision of creating pieces that seamlessly integrate into everyday life.
The second revival is the J39 Chair with an upholstered seat, an evolution of Mogensen's celebrated 1947 design. Known as one of Denmark's most recognisable design icons, the J39 has been a fixture in homes and public spaces for more than 75 years. The upholstered version traces back to 1969, when Mogensen created a prototype with a canvas seat for his own country home and studio. With this reintroduction, Fredericia adds "a new dimension to the design while staying true to its heritage."
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972), Fredericia's in-house designer for decades, played a central role in shaping Danish furniture design. His collaboration with Andreas Graversen and Fredericia from 1955 produced some of his most influential work. Mogensen's ability to distil natural materials into timeless expressions ensures his designs remain relevant "across various times, generations, and cultures."
With these reissues, Fredericia once again affirms its commitment to preserving Mogensen's legacy and extending his vision into the present day.
