IKEA launches second-hand marketplace in Poland to boost circular economy

IKEA has launched a second-hand platform in Poland, enabling customers to buy and sell used IKEA furniture for the first time. The service is initially available to IKEA Family club members and marks the Swedish company's first foray into the marketplace model.

The platform allows users to list both current and discontinued IKEA products, with sellers providing photos, descriptions, and pickup arrangements. Payment options include an IKEA e-refund card with a 5% discount on future purchases or a direct bank transfer. Each item must be verified as an authentic IKEA product.

Kirsten Andersson, Managing Director for Platform & Marketplaces at Ingka Group, stated that the initiative aims to "encourage customers to give their furniture a second life in an easy and accessible way" while making IKEA products more affordable. Małgorzata Bochenek, Business Development and Digital Director at IKEA Retail in Poland, added that the platform addresses the needs of customers already exchanging furniture on social media, providing a secure and convenient alternative.

The launch supports IKEA's broader sustainability goals, including designing products to be reusable, repairable, resold, or recycled by 2030. The global second-hand furniture market is projected to exceed $60 billion by 2030, reflecting rising demand for circular solutions and sustainable consumption.
